Translational Basics.
What are these terms that we use at the TPMH? What exactly do we mean by "translational science" or "dissemination?"
Translational science is a way of approaching science and practice that, at minimum, integrates perspectives from researchers, clinicians, and patients. Specific behaviors vary by framework, but broadly translational science involves constant communication, cooperation, and partnership between all interested parties to further patient outcomes.
Dissemination Dissemination is the act of putting information out into the world via a product. This product can be a Tweet, blog post, infographic, opinion article, video, or anything that you can imagine!
The key dissemination products at the TPMH include: Messy Media - Ever read a pop science article that was too good to be true? Messy Media compares what the media says about a topic to the original scientific article. News You Can Use - Most scholarly articles are behind paywalls and are also written in inaccessible language. News You Can Use gives provides readers with the key take-home points of a scholarly article. Friday Fun Facts - Sometimes we just want to share neat findings! Friday Fun Facts are short posts with links to the original source material. Tuesday Talk - It is good to get to know the individuals behind the research. Tuesday Talk lifts the veil between researchers and the public to make partnerships easier. Marvelous Mondays - These are special products that do not fit into the other categories. |
Knowledge Translation Knowledge translation is when information is being actively communicated in person (or over video) from one individual to another. This can be a lecture, workshop, or other learning venue.
The TPMH has been actively engaged in knowledge translation as part of our efforts to 1) discuss what translation is and 2) teach others how to conduct translation. The key knowledge translation formats at the TPMH include: Case Study Evaluation - Taking tips from the business world, these events bring clinicians, researchers, and students together to answer questions about a substance use-related "case." Classroom Lectures - A typical format where one of our leaders presents on the basics of translational science and connects it to the topics as requested by the professor. Workshops - Want to actually do translation? This is the event for you. Whether in the context of a classroom or special meeting, we love giving hands-on workshops and leaving you with the skills to be a translational specialist. |
Networking Networking is the glue that holds translation together. Whether it is through informal or formal events, partnerships and connections facilitate science communication.
There are no "set" networking events or activities at this time. Please reach out if you are interested in growing this arm of the TPMH with us! |
